Heller Highwater – A One Hit Wonder?

The ABA Journal released its 2nd annual list of the top 100 legal blogs called the Blawg 100 and, sniff sniff, Heller Highwater was not among them.  Well, sort of.

HH was deemed to be a One-Hit Wonder among the legal blogosphere meaning, as the article put it, “generated a lot of buzz in 2008, but they didn’t make it into the Blawg 100. And for whatever reasons, their moment seems to have passed.”  Oh well, there is something to say about being a fad, no?

But despite being the Pet Rock of the legal blogs, Heller Highwater will “keep on keepin’ on” as we used to say in the 70s.  And knowing my love of 80s music, I guess I should be content that I am in such good company as “I Want Candy” by Bow Wow Wow. Enjoy.

    Aww, come on, HD, you are far from a one-hit wonder in our eyes! You kept us afloat. Just because the rest of the blog world has moved on doesn’t mean that some of have. I still check in here every day for any information. Even though I am currently working (temp to perm), I take nothing for granted – especially idle promises from Heller! So, cheer up, HD, you’re the best!!!

    Seems to me things have come full circle for some of you. Walking around with your noses in the air like all the non-Heller employees were beneath you. Well, here’s your reality check. We were all the same. Some of you made it your point on a daily basis to convey just how nasty you could be. For those of you that did you know this was a long time coming and you deserve every second of your misery. Those of you this doesn’t apply to I wish the best of luck in getting what’s due. Karma is real

    I’m sorry to hear about your experience but I have to confirm that I’ve seen this type of behavior at each place I’ve worked but especially law firms. How many of us have seen this scenario: you are waiting for an elevator chatting with one of the attorneys and as soon as another attorney comes along, especially a partner, you cease to exist. You are not brought into the conversation (because being a lowly support staff person you are just too stupid to possible understand the conversation) and basically ignored.

    The attorneys I miss the most are the ones who went out of their way to engage me in what was going on and didn’t treat me like some hand towel. No one – not Williams Lee staff, not secretaries, etc. – should ever feel “less than” or be made to feel that way by someone with whom they work.

    As a big believer in Karma I do think some of this nastiness has come home to roost on attorney doorsteps. I only wish it upon those who could learn the lessons of how to treat staff. Having karma visit the other dolts who mistreat staff is simply wasted.

- Don't be a dill weed.

- Treat other people the way you want to be treated.

- Ladies and children first.

- This is a rescue, not a bitch session.

- Help don't harm.

- Save the snarks for the attorneys and Above The Law.

Heller Highwater is not:

- a place to practice viscious and vindictive "whisper down the lane" rumour-mongering;

- a place to bad mouth co-workers;

- a place for diatribes against specific people or specific incidents;

- a place to heap pity on poor Heller Ehrman staff by outsiders;

- a place that discriminates or sets margins noting who is outside and who is inside - we even welcome supportive Heller Ehrman attorneys!;

- meant to further the demise of Heller Ehrman, LLP.

Heller Highwater is:

- a place for support, a place of empowerment, a place of passion;

- a place to learn about job leads, resume preparation, skill building, training, new opportunities, and how to succeed in a new workplace;

- a place to keep up on the latest news as to how Heller Ehrman management intends to treat its support staff as it winds down its operations - will it be every woman for herself? or will it be "let me hold the door for you and is there anything else I can do for you"?

- a place of refuge.
