Free Tax Advice

I just found out that TurboTax has made the following offer:

Enter your tax question online and you will receive a call-back from a live tax professional (as opposed to a dead tax professional?) within 24 hours.

There are some restrictions such as questions are limited to certain Federal tax forms (1040 (personal) and 1065, 1120, or 1120S (business)) and there is a limit of one question.  But if you have any questions concerning your taxes for 2008 and especially if the Heller Ehrman dissolution has any impact, please take advantage of this offer by January 31, 2009.

Nice tip. Here’s the question I submitted to TurboTax:

My company went bankrupt in October 2008, terminated its employees, and refuses to pay me the four-weeks accrued vacation pay to which I was entitled. The value of this vacation pay is about $10,000. Am I entitled to treat this lost $10,000 as a “tax loss” on my 2008 IRS Form 1040? If so, how do I show it?

    And the answer was?

Boy, the TurboTax tax advisor team works fast. A very knowledgeable guy called me two hours after I submitted my online query. He then immediately followed up with this email confirmation:

TurboTax ANSWER: “As I explained during our telephone conversation, the lost vacation time is implied income, so there is nothing to deduct. The vacation was just a benefit.”
