Heller Highwater is, in essence, a support site for the professional support staff of a global law firm in turmoil:  Heller Erhman, LLP.

The name Heller Highwater is a reminder for all who visit to remember the “highwaters” of Heller Ehrman: when a once well-managed and well-respected firm consistently reached the high marks of integrity, efficiency,  respect and dignity towards its backbone and foundaton – its professional support staff.

It is also a reminder of the aftermath of destruction and the mark left on the wall: how a lack of preparation, forward-thinking, open communication and honesty led to the downfall of a workplace one could be proud of.

When the storm recedes, all that will be left is that mark.  But a core group of intelligent, creative, and driven people won’t be around to clean up the mess.  They will have moved on to better things, better places and better times.  This site gives them the tools to do that.

—–*—–

Heller Highwater is not:

– a place to practice viscious and vindictive “whisper down the lane” rumour-mongering;

– a place to bad mouth co-workers;

– a place for diatribes against specific people or specific incidents;

– a place to heap pity on poor Heller Ehrman staff by outsiders;

– a place that discriminates or sets margins noting who is outside and who is inside – we even welcome supportive Heller Ehrman attorneys!;

– meant to further the demise of Heller Ehrman, LLP.

Heller Highwater is:

– a place for support, a place of empowerment, a place of passion;

– a place to learn about job leads, resume preparation, skill building, training, new opportunities, and how to succeed in a new workplace;

– a place to keep up on the latest news as to how Heller Ehrman management intends to treat its support staff as it winds down its operations – will it be every woman for herself? or will it be “let me hold the door for you and is there anything else I can do for you”?

– a place of refuge.

Please read our Terms of Service for more do’s and don’ts.

Note:  in no way, shape or form is Heller Highwater sanctioned, supported or even recognized, (but it is very likely monitored) by the management of Heller Erhman, LLP. The opinions represented here and on each and every page of Heller Highwater do not constitute the opinions of Heller Ehrman, LLP or its shareholders or its management.

    It is a shame of what is happening with Heller Ehrman. With that being said I am a legal recruiter and have a ton of openings for qualified support staff. While the downfall of Heller Ehrman is terrible it is not the end of the world for some. I have plenty of jobs available and would love to help out anyone I can. Please if you are a paralegal or legal secretary or even an attorney I have a position out there for you. Please feel free to give me a call at (212) 631-7520 to see what opportunity there may be for you.

    Haven’t shed a tear about the spilled milk, but am beginning to worry about being able to afford new milk. I am grateful for this site and hope it grows with information that is helpful and upbeat. I am very concerned about losing my job and trying very hard not to imagine worst case scenarios. Want to be as proactive as possible without being frantic. Hopefully, this site will provide me (and others) with support and useful information to plan forward and not get stuck in the what-ifs. Thanks to the creators of this site for making a valuable contribution.

    You are welcome! New milk is hard to find especially with the economy but don’t let Heller management play that game of blaming the economy instead of taking responsibility. This is mismanagement pure and simple.

    I’m glad you made a comment and I hope others will do so as well.

    To the first poster — You are shameless.

    To the second poster — I agree with your sentiments. There is still light at the end of this tunnel and I’m here to try to make it happen. We should all keep our spirits high and our options open.

    To the admin — Thanks for this site.

    No commenter flames please. While you may think that a recruiter posting comments here is akin to an attorney as ambulance chaser, I don’t agree.

    I encourage recruiters who are connected to the legal network in whatever city to post their information here.

    While I appreciate the intent behind this web site, we also need and deserve a place to vent – –

    Shame on the IP lit group for bolting over the weekend and decapitating the firm – – you may have served your own needs, but you sank the rest of us. Nice job, selfish bastards.

    Where is Matt and our outstanding CMO in this ordeal????? Hello, hello, Lynn ?????????? What’s our message? Where’s the truth? You and Frank are pigs. Frank is so inept and incompetent – – maybe Frank can use the downtime to shed some tonnage and grow a sense of humor in addition to acquiring some real management and supervisory skills – – and you acted like Matt was your puppet. You sicken everyone with your conduct. For the record, aside from the posse you arrived with, no one, NO ONE in this firm has an ounce of respect for you. thanks for the shitty work, the adversarial, elitist and arrogant environment you cultivated, and the daily crap you inflicted on so many of us. God have mercy on the next firm you seduce and invade, you pieces of shit.

    How could this have happened? Where was the executive committee???????? Where is the leadership and soul that once forged and guided this firm to its preeminent place in the legal community??? Such a sad ending to a storied firm.

  9. 9 hellerdrone 17 September 2008 at 5:36 pm

    Deb – thanks for the comments. I want to try to be as welcoming as possible and I know that sites like Abovethelaw are geared more towards venting coming from lowly associates. So I’ve decided not to block your comments. I don’t fully agree but I fully respect the fact that there is a time to vent.

    I think you’ve actually touched many of the hot issues that we have as Heller support staff.

    Tomorrow is Thursday and it will be our first Open Thread Thursday. I encourage you to come back and contribute more.

    Wow – I just got into my office this afternoon from Mexico and I found this site. I am a former Heller attorney from San Diego. I spent 7 years at the firm. From 2000-2003 I absolutely loved. I felt like we were at the helm of a wonderful trend and legal culture. In San Diego, we felt like pioneers by opening a new office and planting our flag in the ground and making a mark. Back then, I really drank and enjoyed the Kool-Aid. Barry’s message, the 3 arrows, the whole philosophy made so much sense. Then things started to turn, slowly at first, but then you could just feel the tension. It became just like any other firm — sniping, jealous, divisive. I went from feeling that I was part of a larger team, to worrying about what’s lurking around the corner. It shows you how fragile things are and how difficult it is to keep that elan. I made my decision to leave when I no longer felt emotionally invested in the firm. Best of luck to you all — I hope you find stability and are able to move forward.

    I’m wondering where is Brad Scott our COO? I was hoping that he would turn our stupid org chart around and clean house. I think it is really ridiculous having 5 chiefs and a gazillion directors. Can anyone advise if the chairman can be impeached? He has given power to all these empty puppets who instead of contributing just take what they can get until they move on to another host to feed off.

  12. 12 Suzisuzuki 19 September 2008 at 4:45 pm

    WOW! I’m in shock. I’m so sorry to hear about Heller Erhman. They were a good firm. I have many pals over there who I worked with for many years at another firm. You guys keep your heads up and hold on. As soon as the dust settles and the economy flips, there will be light that you can find at the end of the tunnel. I heard there may not be severance packages, so whoever is left right now, don’t feel obligated to hang on, please start looking for another job asap and get out of there as soon as you can and not don’t wait for the door to lock and be stuck in the twilight zone without anything. In the meantime, look at your household budgets, get rid of as many credit cards, do some consolidating, cut other costs (i.e., extra cars, restaurant dinners, shopping, shows, etc.) whatever you can do so that when the hammer drops, the impact won’t be as devestating.

    Good luck to you all. I know the feeling, been there, had it happen (twice!), survived each time – as will you.

    Hellerdrone and everyone else,

    Good site and thanks for allowing everyone to post on here.

    Your firm is going to be missed in the Seattle Legal Community!

    I am sure you all have been inundated with recruiters, agencies and others offering to help in this time of chaos and in some respects some of us may look like vultures.

    However, I want you all to know that some of us truly do have your best interests in mind because in an uncertain economy we want and need you to find other employment as soon as possible!

    If you do not already have another job lined up, reach out to a recruiter you know and trust. A recruiter can be a valuable asset in not only helping you find a job, but can assist with drafting a resume, give you interviewing tips or even just letting you know what trends are in your particular legal market.

    If you are a Heller Erhman employee in the Seattle area, my team of recruiters and I would like to be a resource for you. At Robert Half Legal, our service is free to the employee and while we cannot promise you a job, we promise to work hard to find you your next home. We provide both temporary and direct-hire/permanent placement services for all legal professionals: attorneys, paralegals, secretaries and other support staff.

    Robert Half International is a full-service staffing company with recruiters specializing in IT/Technology, Finance & Accounting, Marketing & Creative and General Office Support Services as well so if you are a professional in any of these areas please contact me and I will put you in touch with a colleague who can assist you!

    Good luck to all of you.

    My heart has been heavy with sadness these past weeks, following what I knew was a spiral of events that would lead to this. I was at Heller for 20 years — I grew up there. I have many wonderful memories of my time there and all the wonderful people I worked with. To my row sisters, there is life after Heller and you will land on your feet! To my best friend, you need the break!!! My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  23. 23 Anonymous 4 October 2008 at 5:42 pm

    I’m telling everyone to use “sick time” (just up to the point of needing a doctor’s note) rather than use any vacation time, even if you get another job within in the 60 days.

    Anyone know of any flaws with that idea?

  24. 24 hellerdrone 4 October 2008 at 6:09 pm

    I don’t think sick time is a problem – but a massive sick out may not be the best approach. I hate to say it, and even though many of us are not motivated to show up for work, especially since we have nothing to do, showing up each day and making it clear that you are ready for work and not going anywhere is probably the best message we can send.

    If the shareholders can see us each time they leave their offices, run into us in the elevator, and if we can make them uncomfortable as much as possible, we will be fighting a war of the psyche which is exactly what they are trying to do.

    My eye’s are puffy and my heart is heavy. I left Heller yesterday crying. I don’t look so good this morning:-). I spoke with some of my co-workers yesterday that I have never really chatted with and I realized that the professional staff at Heller are/were some of the best people I have every had the pleasure of meeting even with such a poor HR staff we recruited the best. Most of us took this in stride until yesterday when the whole layoff was botched by Judy Martin who can’t even cut and paste a group of names into and Outlook email! That I think was the final straw for me. If the EA to the COO is inept enough to not even know Outlook that shows you who was running the firm. I am sad for leaving all my friends but to be truthful we were not saving lives at Heller. We will all be fine and good things always come from things like this. Everyone will find new employment and new paths in life I am 100% sure of that. I love this site and have never looked at it until this morning because my husband who is not a Heller employee told me how wonderful it is. Thank you for creating this site Cruise Director! I must go now and enjoy this sunny Saturday. Keep a positive attitude and remember this is just a short chapter in your life it’s a big book out there not a short story.

    Hello, Heller-ites and former Heller-ites,
    I’m a professional coach and another coach and I want to team up to do a free workshop for Heller Ehrman employees to help you all transition through these changes. How can I get the word out? Can I send the administrator of this site a quick blurb to post or post something here?
    Thank you,
    Jeanne

  28. 28 WeWannaHelp 11 October 2008 at 3:47 pm

    With permission from the “Cruise Director,” I’d like to inform you of something we’re creating to help current and former Heller employees.

    We are professional business coaches and have been following the plight of your sinking ship for a few weeks now. We’re sorry you are all in this position at a crazy time in our economy and we’re hoping we might be able to help. As coaches, we’re trained to help people in transition through times like these and we’d love to lend our services to anybody who needs them now. We are setting up a complimentary workshop just for Heller Ehrman Los Angeles employees. The focus will be to help you develop your own personal transition plan. The workshop will be right down the street from your office on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 12:00 noon at 445 South Figueroa Street, Suite 2700. It’s totally free to attend.

    Why are we doing this? Bev has worked with law firms most of her career and Jeanne has had the same unfortunate experience of being out of work through no fault of her own. We’re teaming up in hopes of giving back. These are tough times and we have some tools we think might help.

    To find out more or RSVP call Bev at 310-306-9898 or Jeanne and 310-823-8607 or email us at jschad@internalrelations.com.

    We’d love to meet you, share a soda and slice of pizza and help you figure out your own way of going about what’s next (another job at a law firm, retirement, switching industries, backpacking through New Zealand – whatever your next step might be).

    Hope to meet you soon and lend our services.

    Best of luck to you all,
    Bev Weise and Jeanne Schad
    Certified Professional Coaches

    It so sad to see this happen to Heller, Heller used to be a good place to work for, is like a family, as the year passed by new management who outsource the Record Department, mailroom department and the copy department, it went down hill from there, I feeler sorry for all the employee there, some I still know and I still visited, I’m a ex Heller employee who been laid off, I was kind of hurt when it happen to me, now I’m over it, I’m working in another law firm now, I still miss the people that I talk to and bum into on the street, I remember the good time I have there, is so sad to see how all the employee who work so hard to make this firm a better place to work for. When I heard the news about the closing of Heller I felt like crying.

    My daughter called a week ago and said did you hear about Heller, to my surprise this morning I learned what happened to Heller. I have been on LTD for 4 years due to a very bad injury while employed by Heller. I loved working at Heller and had every in tension of working there until a ripe age of 62 (until injury) The coworkers/friends I made in the 5 years I worked in SF were great. The Firm I was proud to work for and I told everyone so. I’m sorry to see that somewhere along the way the firm lost there integrity and there dedication to the employees who made the firm. To everyone I knew, HI and I’m sorry that you are having to deal with this loss at the same time we deal with the global turmol and the closer to home hardships in the state we love and live in.

- Don't be a dill weed.

- Treat other people the way you want to be treated.

- Ladies and children first.

- This is a rescue, not a bitch session.

- Help don't harm.

- Save the snarks for the attorneys and Above The Law.

Heller Highwater is not:

- a place to practice viscious and vindictive "whisper down the lane" rumour-mongering;

- a place to bad mouth co-workers;

- a place for diatribes against specific people or specific incidents;

- a place to heap pity on poor Heller Ehrman staff by outsiders;

- a place that discriminates or sets margins noting who is outside and who is inside - we even welcome supportive Heller Ehrman attorneys!;

- meant to further the demise of Heller Ehrman, LLP.

Heller Highwater is:

- a place for support, a place of empowerment, a place of passion;

- a place to learn about job leads, resume preparation, skill building, training, new opportunities, and how to succeed in a new workplace;

- a place to keep up on the latest news as to how Heller Ehrman management intends to treat its support staff as it winds down its operations - will it be every woman for herself? or will it be "let me hold the door for you and is there anything else I can do for you"?

- a place of refuge.
